Welcome to the newest (old) section of NBAK -- The "Vintage Stuff" Page. Over the last few months, we have received a lot of great old pix that really don't fall into any of our existing categories, so we have decided to give them a page of there own.

Here you will find pixs that are at least 30 years old or more - most of the pixs received have little or no information in regards to date, type of injury, type of brace, source, etc.. However, we will try to take an educated guess at all above info, if none is available for a particular photograph. Please feel free to send us any additional info or corrections regarding the list below.

*vctlso02 1930'ish or so Virtually all Steel CTLSO/ Milwaukee Spinal Brace This brace does not look comfortable at all -- notice the early style turnbuckles at the back with the steel levers to apply more presure to one side of the spine and straighten out the curve -- Ouch! *vtlso03 1930'ish or so Canvas, Leather and Steel TLSO/Taylor Type Back Brace/Corset 85% Cheaper, 100 % better is the claims of this early TLSO/Taylor Type Back Brace/Corset -"throw away that plaster-of paris cast forever" Great ad -- make sure you read the fine print. *vc14 1940'ish or so Custom Leather Cervical Collar with Body Jacket This custom fabricated leather cervical collar a an excellent example of quality workmanship before the days of off-the-shelf type plastic collars -- note the steel stays in the front and back to keep the collar rigid. *pglass01 1940'ish or so Plexiglass Collar A very nice example of a vintage Plexiglass Collar. Dr. Marquardt in München used Plexiglas for various medical purposes in 1938. After the war, the firm of Helmut Röck in Kirchheim-Teck used Plexidur to make orthopedic apparatus of different kinds. 1956 German Book on the use of plastics in the medical field. PlexiglassCollar
*vc13 1950'ish or so Leather Collar A very nice example of a vintage Thomas Type Collar -looks to be made out of leather and some type of soft material for the padding. The collar design really has not changed much in 50 years , only the materials. Vintage Medical Book Vintage Thomas Type Collar

*vc11 1940'ish or so Black leather Cervical Collar This type of collar was used extensively in the 1940's and 50's before plastic and other modern materials. Today, the only place you will see a black leather collar is in a B&D Store that specializes in such kinky items. NBAK fan
*vc10 1950 ish Pneumatic Cervical Collar This is an early version of an air filled cervical collar that still exist today. notice the pressure gauge so it can be filled to your doctors recommended PSI. An NBAK fan dug it out of the AAOS Appliance Atlas - Circa 1952

*vc07 1950 ish Acrylic Cervical Jacket. Mfg by the V.A. Hospital, Hines, Ill. This is a custom molded clear acrylic cervical jacket -- designed to hold the cervical spine and upper thoracic region in a rigid position - the idea behind the clear plastic was to make the brace undetectable. *vc06 1960 ish First of a NEW generation of Plastic Cervical Collars This Pix shows a lady in what looks to be the first in a All New generation of plastic collars - a similar collar is still made today. NBAK Fan - Looks to be out of a medical book of some sort.
