Video Alert 10-28-02 http://www.fridamovie.com/ I watched a special that interviewed the actress- Salma. They showed a few scences from the movie, and it will be a brace fan's treat. In real life, Frida had polio, and limped. But they showed scenes of her wearing an EXTENSIVE aluminum back back- an classic of classics! Hope you get to see it in the theater- it comes out soon! Update: 11-12-02 I saw the movie in the theater Sunday night. It is a very well done and acted movie about the life and times of both Diego Rivera, and Frida. In real life, she had polio, and I believe wore a leg brace. In the film, she does not. The elaborate back brace she wears is only shown in the last 10 minutes of the film, and very close up, but for about 30 seconds. DVD captures of this brace will be cool, but will take a while to get to the marketplace. As a film, I recommend seeing it. Very visual, very 'artsy'....but professional. Selma IS Frida! |

5-20-02 I recommend that you go to http://faheykleingallery.com , the web site of the Fahey Klein Gallery in Los Angeles, click on "Exhibitions" and then on "Fakir Musafar" to find an interesting photo of a young man wearing a tall stiff collar. It's apparently made of leather and closed in back by eyelets and lacing, much like an antique corset. Although it's not made by a medical supply house, it functions much like a cervical collar. The wearer can turn his head left and right, even though his neck is stretched to the limit, but because its upper and lower edges are much narrower than the usual collar, it is surely less comfortable. Some members of nbak or visitors might want to make their own collar like this one. In addition to being shown currently in the Fahey Klein Gallery, this photo is included, I believe, in a book of photographs, "Spirit + Flesh", published in 2002 by Arena Editions. 7-25-01 Just thought I'd let you know about a possible vidcap opportunity - the movie is called 'Lightning in a Bottle' and stars Linda Carter of Wonderwoman fame. It features her in a Short Stifneck collar after a road crash. Unfortunately, I only caught a glimpse of it and was unable to record it. |

7-25-01 Look up the movie "Good Burger." In it, there is a great scene of Carmen Electra wearing a huge white foam collar, using crutches, and with her right arm in a sling. It's a great scene if you're a soft collar fan, like me. There are also some good scenes of a high school girl wearing a soft collar in the movie "Side Kicks." I think there's about three or four different short scenes. I don't know the actresses name though. Finally, there are a few scenes of an attractive woman in a Philly collar in the Disney (TV) movie "Murder She Purred: A Mrs. Murphy Mystery." Again I don't know her name. |

Alert A member of the German Orthesen Forum mentions a recent TV play called "Verfluchter Mist" that features a girl in a Milwaukee brace. She is later prepared for surgery in a traction bed. Sounds great! If you post it in your list someone may be on the lookout for it and tape it. |

| Some days ago I saw the video of "Fight Club" with Brad Pitt and Edward Norton. One short scene fairly at the end of the film contains a halo brace worn by a barkeeper who took a fight in a fight club. The scene is not too attractive, because it's slightly dark in the restaurant. |

interest Last Sunday's New York Times had a brief write up about an upcoming film titled "The Million Dollar Hotel". It stars Mel Gibson as a police detective who wears a complex back brace. There was a photo accompanying the article showing Mel Gibson talking with the film's director. On the ground between them is what sure looks like a clear plastic brace with something on the top. Little hard to tell, but whatever it is sure looks interesting!.... The film isn't out yet, but sounds like one to check out. |
